Final preparations are under way for the Green Line's big debut

Excitement is building throughout Deep Ellum, Fair Park and South Dallas as work crews race toward the September 14 grand opening of the Green Line - the next phase of DART Rail and the great yellow and white hope for much of the historic area.

"Trains brought Deep Ellum to life in the late 1800s, beginning with the Houston & Texas Central railroad, and we believe DART's trains will be the catalyst for this area again," says Barry Annino, president of the Deep Ellum Foundation.

At Baylor University Medical Center, the Green Line will provide the facility's 300,000 annual patients and 5,225 employees with easy connections to their appointments and jobs.

"The Green Line expansion is critical to the future of Baylor," says Joel Allison, president and CEO of Baylor Health Care System. "Baylor is growing, and it's very important for us - and for the metroplex - that people have such convenient access to jobs and to health services."

And for the annual State Fair of Texas and the museums and cultural facilities at Fair Park, the line will be a boon for tourism. The park already gets more than 7 million visitors every year, and that number is expected to multiply with the first urban rail service to the park in more than 50 years.

While the new stations coming to life just south of downtown Dallas get most of the attention, Victory Station - which currently only serves special events at American Airlines Center - will be christened a regular stop on September 14, as well.

"Clearly the full-time service will be a boost for retailers and entertainment venues such as the House of Blues, but office tenants in Victory Plaza and One Victory Park will be able to ride DART for their daily commutes," says Ken Reese, executive vice president of Hillwood Development. "From a broader perspective, the service will be a valuable asset for the entire Uptown neighborhood, which currently is served only by Cityplace Station on the east."

Blue and Orange Too

Recent events in Irving and Rowlett are evidence that DART Rail is on its way to those communities too. In April, Irving and DART officials celebrated debut the first delivery of steel rails that will stretch to the Las Colinas Urban Center by 2011.

"This light rail project is incredibly important to the businesses of Irving and the entire DFW region," said Chris Wallace, president and CEO of the Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce. "It will be a new front door to our city and provide much-needed access to jobs and facilitate additional future development."

In Rowlett, community and business leaders broke ground in April for the Downtown Rowlett Station � the terminus of a 4.5-mile extension of the Blue Line slated to open in December 2012.

"This is the beginning of economic development in the city of Rowlett that is unparalleled," said Rowlett Mayor John Harper. "We're now entering a whole new era."

That era will include a new $350-$500 million mixed-use development on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard and bordered by DART Rail and an extension of the President George Bush Turnpike. Developed by the City of Rowlett in partnership with Lone Star Companies of Dallas, the project will have more than 4 million square feet of restaurants, retail, offices, a hotel, convention center and new residential properties. Construction will begin in 2010.

Combined, the Green, Orange and Blue Line projects will double the DART Rail System to more than 90 miles.
