DART – Let's Go.

Transit Education. Making North Texans DART-smart!

Grade 4: Economy On The GO!

Economy On The GO! is a brand new unit and demonstrates the critical link between transportation and local and global economies. Trucking, shipping, overnight mail, automobiles, airlines and more make the world go round.

Students become agents of the "Economic Bureau of Investigation" and uncover the secret to the future economic success of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In their agent handbooks, students read passages and crack codes, while learning the importance of rail, rivers and roads to the economy. Students also participate in a global economy cyberhunt, tracking the origins of their favorite clothes, toys and household items. They learn about transportation-related career choices and interview experts in the field.

Economy On The GO! features two lessons: 1) Dallas Economy - How History Reveals The Future and 2) Transportation & The Marketplace. Unit highlights include PowerPoints, an agent handbook, agent training stickers and Economic Bureau of Investigation certificates.

In addition to the lessons, Economy On The GO! has four activities:

Lesson One - Dallas Economy - How History Reveals The Future

Activity 1.1 - Operation: Future Prediction
Students become special agents for the "Economic Bureau of Investigation" and discover the driving force behind western settlement and the development of business and industry.

Lesson Two - Transportation & The Marketplace

  Activity 2.1 - Someday, I Wanna Be A...
Wow! Look at all the jobs connected to transportation. Students select future career possibilities based on required education, salary ranges and interests. Collect survey totals and complete a bar chart to discover class career preferences!

Activity 2.2 - Stuff... And Where It Comes From
How did all this stuff get here? Students follow the trail of imports and exports, researching items from home. They complete an online search and participate in a discussion about the global marketplace.

Activity 2.3 - The Day Transportation Stopped!
Students learn about the critical role of transportation by researching times when transportation activity stopped. Imagination is sparked as students do a mock newscast, report "on location" or write a blog post about "The Day Transportation Stopped!"
